"The Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias From Peru" (http://www.barbesrecords.com/)
After many years of underground and musician-circle acclaim, a whole genre of thirty-year-old cumbias (a style of music originating in Colombia) called Chicha, are returning to the forefront of Peruvian popularity. Groups like Los Mirlos and Los Hijos del Sol are gaining modern recognition years after the fact for their enticingly cheesy and slightly psychedelic should-be-standards like "Ya Se Ha Muerto Mi Abuelo" and "Si Me Quieres." A few of the songs featured on this CD are part of the soundtrack of the 2009 Peruvian movie "La Teta Amarga" (The Bitter Nipple), a great movie about a lot of things Peruvian. Other bands on the CD include: Juaneco y Su Combo, Los Destellos, Los Diablos Rojos, y Eusebio y Su Banjo.
This is probably one of the coolest CDs that I have ever heard given its obscurity and grittiness of recording.
Happy Listening.
